PE & Games

All pupils take part in timetabled P.E. and gymnastic lessons from the age of three. These mostly take place using the school's gymnastics hall, our hard court area and on the all-weather 3G astro-turf surface.

The school prides itself on offering a range of coaching both in curricular and extra-curricular time. This includes: association football, rugby union, tag- rugby, athletics, hockey, cricket, cross country, trampolining, badminton, tennis, swimming and sailing. Most lessons or after-school sessions are taught by specialist PE staff including a former professional footballer and qualified UEFA A (level 4) Coach.

Swimming is coached to both beginners and experienced swimmers through an intensive two-term swimming course at the Loughton Swimming Pool when boys are eight (in Elements); followed by a term of tennis. Rugby is introduced as a curricular sport in Prep.

Competition against other schools is encouraged from Under-8 level and includes a great variety of local and regional fixtures in football, rugby (tag and contact), cricket, athletics, cross country and swimming. Our U11 football team have reached the ESSFA (English small schools) national finals for the past four years – runners-up 2018, champions in 2017. They have also reached the ISFA (Independent schools) national final in 2019.

Ultimately, through the program of study, we aim that each pupil:

  • becomes more skillful;

  • has greater physical competency;

  • improves fitness;

  • becomes more self-motivated;

  • becomes a safer performer
